Ya gotta have class

Classes in the morning, classes in the evenings. My Spanish classes each morning continue to challenge me. And this week, I started my classes each evening to earn my Spain driver’s license.

It’s amazing how much there is to learn. I’ve heard for years how challenging it can be to pass all of the theoretical tests, even before one can begin to take the actual driving class and test. I’m spending about an hour a day studying, and another hour Monday-Thursday evenings in class. And it will take about two months and close to €1,000 (my estimate) to get it all done. The course materials are mostly available in English. But the classes are in Spanish. If nothing else, the classes are helping expand my Spanish vocabulary.

While you are seeing what a taste for learning I’ve developed. You already probably knew what a taste for food I have.

On Wednesday evening, my neighbor Carlos and I went to El Molinion, a restaurant known for their meats.

We started with a Turbio wine (same s as last week). Then enjoyed Txistorra (chorizo), Lacon (a type of ham), and anchovies, all as appetizers. The main course was Carrillada (Pork jowl served in a red wine sauce). I cannot begin to describe how tender, moist and succulent that dish was. Forget paella. Forget Arroz al Horno. My new favorite dish in Spain is Carrillada. Incredible!

Afterwards, we went out for an Agua de Valencia. Here, to everyone who has visited and I have taken you to my favorite spot for Agua de Valencia, I owe you an apology. You must come back! I have a new favorite place!

San Jaume Cafe has the best Agua de Valencia over ever tried. Made with fresh squeezed orange juice, it was amazing!

This weekend was more social than normal. On Friday, I had lunch with my friend Kenton, who lives in Madrid. We met as volunteers during the Gay Games earlier this summer. On Saturday, I had breakfast with Rodrigo (Argentinian friend), and then lunch with the volunteer team from the bowling competition during the Gay Games.

Today, I enjoyed a quiet day at the beach.

I often have said in this blog how much I love hosting visitors. But this week, I thought I’d share something different. My friend Matt has started a spiritually focused travel company. He’s currently planning a ten-day trip through Spain in Spring 2027, studying the teachings of Saint Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Ignatius of Loyola, all guided by theologian, Dr. Peter Tyler.

Check out his video. I think it will be a powerful experience for those are able to attend.

(And because someone will ask, I get nothing whether you watch the video, nor of you join the tour. I just know some of you will be very interested….)

Whether you’re traveling, studying or working, here’s wishing you a great week ahead.
